AIDS Services Foundation Orange County (“ASF”) invites sculptural artists to submit an application and proposal for creation of a three-dimensional public art sculpture (“the sculpture”). The sculpture is planned to be displayed in four to six areas throughout Orange County, CA, for four to six weeks at a time. Some or all of the proposed display areas may be openly exposed to the elements.
The commission grant is $5,000 (“the grant”). The grant must cover all materials and artist time used in creation of the sculpture and will be awarded upon delivery.
Prior public art experience is not a requirement. The initial display period will begin on World AIDS Day, Monday, December 1, 2014. The final sculpture must be completed and installed by that date.
ASF has embarked upon a three-year communications plan consisting primarily of public art. The works created throughout this project will convey “HIV is not yet cured” (“the message”) and bring attention to the on-going struggle against HIV/AIDS in Orange County as well as ASF’s position as a leader in HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and care in the community.
ASF currently cares for 1,600 men, women, and children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS in Orange County, CA. On average, five persons per week are infected with HIV in our community. Nearly 40% of new infections occur in people aged thirty-nine years and younger. A more complete picture of HIV/AIDS in Orange County can be found here.
This call is open to emerging and established visual artists, college-aged or older, who are legally authorized to work in the United States (per U.S. Department of Labor). Advanced, high school-aged artists may also apply.
