World AIDS Day 2013

The theme of World AIDS Day through 2015 is “Getting to Zero.” Zero new HIV Infections. Zero Discrimination. Zero AIDS Related Deaths.

Day With(out) Art
Sunday, December 1, 2:00-4:00 PM
Free and open to the public, complimentary refreshments

AIDS Services Foundation Orange County, in collaboration with the Laguna Art Museum, presents a Day With(out) Art on World AIDS Day, December 1.

Day Without Art began on December 1, 1989, as the national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis. In 1997, parentheses were added to the program title, which became Day With(out) Art to highlight the proactive programming of art projects by artists with HIV/AIDS taking place around the world. The museum is pleased to continue this national tradition through a program of community-based collaborative art projects, a live musical performance by Men Alive, inspiring speakers, and a special exhibition.

The museum will host an exhibition of panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Weighing 54 tons and composed of more than 48,000 panels dedicated to more than 94,000 individuals, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is the premier symbol of the AIDS pandemic and the largest ongoing piece of community folk art in the world.

In addition to displaying the AIDS Memorial Quilt panels, the museum, working with local schools, will sponsor a community art project along similar lines: students and visitors to the museum will make “quilt” panels using a variety of media, which will then be displayed in the museum galleries. The theme of World AIDS Day through 2015 is “Getting to Zero.” Zero new HIV Infections. Zero Discrimination. Zero AIDS Related Deaths. In response to the World AIDS Day theme, participants will create panels inspired by five words with the letter “o” replaced with the number zero; L0VE, H0PE, C0MPASSI0N, PREVENTI0N, and C0MMUNITY.

This afternoon event will be a celebration of hope for a day when we “get to zero,” as well as a remembrance of family members, friends, and loved ones lost to AIDS.
